3D Robotics (3DR) Iris Official Users' Thread

Welcome to MultiRotorForums.com!!
finally had a chance to unbox the Iris+ and take a close look at it. it's a very interesting package they've put together with a lot of extras, a ton of potential future capabilities, and yet an overall presentation that can be approached as a simple, ready-to-fly quad with or without a camera mount to start out. The quick start guide could be used regardless of what someone knows or doesn't know about the Pixhawk and could have the new owner flying the same afternoon that they've unpacked it.

i've got to make a "First Impressions" video to start the review and with that I'll also post all of the photos I've taken including interior equipment layout photos. One detail worth mentioning is the four-in-one motor controller module with a pretty large heat sink centrally located below the lower frame plate.

more to come but so far it's all very interesting and i'm looking forward to moving ahead!

i know, i know, it's dead in the water......been flying/working, trying to get our house sold, had two pinewood derby cars to build....will be back at it this evening and this week. every week i'm losing at least a day to clean and show our house, it's been like this every spring for the last three years, maybe this year it will sell. leaving in about thirty minutes for the day so our realtor can do an open house! another day down the tubes!

haven't forgotten it though, in fact will be ordering a new Pixhawk for another build this week. it'll be a heavier lift XY8 with retracts and a new gimbal maybe.

i'm pedaling as fast as i can!

Sorry Bart, being a retired old hermit, I sometimes forget the things normal people have to do. I did just today, finally got my Iris+ "ironed" out, so to speak. First "Auto" flight coming soon! I too want another Pixhawk, but can't decide if I want to just order it $$$, or just order another Iris+ for spare parts, etc. etc. Way I figger, $750 for an Iris+ means you get a Pixhawk, with all the goodies, and a nice quad for about $350.

Use the first Iris, without a camera, to really get to know the Pixhawk. There's just too much it can do and us mortals have to figure out how to make use of it all. The cost of a basic Iris as the price of admission to the world of Pixhawk isn't very much considering the education it can provide.

Hi everyone, I should start doing this (creating a dedicated thread) for all of the new gear that's coming out....so here's the thread for 3D Robotics (3DR) Iris current/future users to discuss the product.

Do we have anyone here flying one? Do they fly well?

Thanks and looking forward to hearing what y'all have to say about them. Good, bad, whatever, let's hear it.

I have one and a GoPro Hero4 with the Tarot gimble. Mine has more than enough power with the camer and gimble plus I have FPV set-up on it and no power problems at all. It flies super and it handles just fine.
If some of the folks who actually have one and it seems under powered try to reset your throttle settings. It's easy to do. And to those that don't own one or even ever flown one dont post hear say. That's just plain dumb

OK, quick question. I know I can search, and search, but does anyone have links to "reload" both the Iris+, and the Flysky TH9 radio, back to the defaults. I've somehow screwed up one, or the other, and no longer get info on my TX screen. Only shows battery voltage of TX. NO sats, dist, etc. etc. woo is me. Also just a tid bit. This is one tough bird! I just accidently hit "auto mode" while flying around under my tree canopy. The Iris+ promptly started gaining altitude (I presume to attempt RTL), and tried it's best to beat itself into pieces in the trees overhead! All that was damaged was I lost one of the rubber feet things off one of the legs! I finally realized what was going on, flipped back to standard mode, and hit the "land" switch. She landed, I shut her down with TX, started her back up, and flew the rest of the battery out! Didn't even break a prop!
The 3DR web site has all the steps to reload the settings for the transmitter posted. It will show you step by step how to program the trans back to factory settings In fact 3DR has a video for just about everything you can think of as to how to fly your first flight and setting up the gimble etc. best factory support I have ever come across for their products. I have played around with my Iris s lot just to learn what makes the thing work.
One thing I know for a fact is when you set it to RTL on the trans it comes back to almost the exact spot it took off from. Once the RTL switch is activated you can put your trans down and it lands so smoothly hands off.
Oh and to reprogram the Pixhawk you can do the in Arducopter site. You just connect the Iris up via the usb cable it comes with to your computer. Then you can reset it to factory settings or tweet them to what ever you like. Let's say the geofence settings. You can change them to what ever you want. It's all really easy to do.
