Hoverfly Thank you for the help - Article of mine in Smithsonian Air and Space on UAV

Thank you! Yes, this forum has been invaluable - in both perusing threads to learn more about how people design, build, fly, and troubleshoot, and also for specific questions. A lot of great people here with a lot of knowledge to share.

Hoverfly Thank you for the help - Article of mine in Smithsonian Air and Space on UAV

I just wanted to thank all of those on this forum who helped me in the process of getting a UAV I designed and built to actually fly. The article just published in Smithsonian Air and Space Magazine, and can be found through the below link. It is heavily edited and shortened from the original...

Hoverfly Crash - Need help figuring out why

Thank you all very much. I've adjusted my gains down and read the notes on 4.8. Everything is back together; just waiting on two prop adapters to get it in the air again. One thing I noticed on the notes is that I need to wait until the GPS is solid green before arming. I did not do this. I...

Hoverfly Crash - Need help figuring out why

So I hooked up my board to the setup client, and checked gain values: With Autoleveling OFF, main gain reads 47 With Autoleveling ON, main gain reads 37 With Altitude Hold Enabled, Altitude Gain is 24 With Altitude Hold OFF, Altitude gain is 5 With Autoleveling Off, and Position hold enabled...

Hoverfly Crash - Need help figuring out why

OK, thank you all! Once I have it back together I'll adjust the gain settings down and see what happens. Best, Ed

Hoverfly Crash - Need help figuring out why

Thanks, Stacky. Do you think that this is because the gain setting is too high? When it lifts off and is in ground effect, it oscillates on all axes, not a lot, but a bit. I think that this may be it. Once I put it back together I can try flying with the HFP board only. Thanks again, Best, Ed

Hoverfly Crash - Need help figuring out why

Thank you, Mike. So you think it was a drop in power? Looking back over the video I can't tell for sure. I'm confident in the solder connections - I paid a lot of attention to this during the build process. Of course, I'm relatively new to this, but did pay close attention. I programmed the ESCs...

Hoverfly Crash - Need help figuring out why

I have version 4.8. I'm not looking at it now, but I seem to remember seeing a gain setting on altitude. I'm using Turnigy plush 25 amp ESCs. Mike, Thank you! By memory, I seem to remember that in the Hoverfly software interface, with the control board plugged in and the board powered, It...

Thanks, Mike. I'll do that. Best, Ed

Hoverfly Crash - Need help figuring out why

Thank you, Paul. I was wondering if it may have been a power issue. I was very careful about soldering, connectors, and insulators (it's a carbon fiber frame) and I'm confident that it isn't a problem with electrical connections, although I am not entirely certain. I have the black board, and...

Hoverfly Crash - Need help figuring out why

I've been flying my recently-completed Y6 a bit. I had everything trimmed out where it was very smooth flying with auto-level enabled. I took it up to about twenty feet and enabled position hold (GPS showed green, a good fix). It stayed in place, and made a slow counter-clockwise circle with a...

Hoverfly First time multi-rotor builder - need some help

Thanks, Fred! I actually had a minor incident... accidentally had position hold on when I armed the board, and it flipped it. Broke some props, but that's it. The carbon fiber frame proved to be pretty tough. Just waiting for some new propellers to arrive. In the meantime had a chance to make...

Hoverfly First time multi-rotor builder - need some help

Well the GPS works, no problem. I have no idea what the problem was. I remounted the antenna, and found that once I armed it and spun the motors up a bit, it goes green, and sometimes blue. In any event, I took it for its first flight. The video below shows the craft flying without autoleveling...

Hoverfly First time multi-rotor builder - need some help

Hmmm. Maybe because I reflashed the board I need to redo the magnetic calibration? Or is that on the main board? Best, Ed

Hoverfly First time multi-rotor builder - need some help

So I've finally finished the build and have correctly configured the boards, run bench tests, and even hopped it off the ground a couple times. I have one last hurdle--the GPS does not seem to be receiving an adequate signal. When I plug it into the setup utility, it shows a checked box next to...

Hoverfly First time multi-rotor builder - need some help

I still have to configure the gain settings and calibrate the GPS, as well as ensure my transmitter is properly configured, but I wanted to do a quick run-up test. It hopped into the air a few inches. Just wanted to ask if everything looks OK from this brief video, or if there are any signs of a...

Hoverfly First time multi-rotor builder - need some help

A quick question on tilt and roll servos. I have not yet calibrated the board in the setup utility (as discussed on page 82 of the manual). Just to make sure everything was connected and functioning properly, I plugged the servos into the HFP, to see how they would respond unloaded. The tilt...
