It uses satellites and/or cell towers.. I haven't used it out in the sticks yet but will report back if I do.. Works as it should when near home.. The cheap gps device on Amazon/eBay that uses a GSM sim card needs cell towers..

Be sure to level your Naza, gimbal mount and then level your multirotor and then run the advanced calibration..

I had one neighbor come to my house and accuse me of stalking her/kids with my Multirotor.. I'm hovering over her house filming the sun going down till I aim the camera down to descend.. At that point she's getting rushed by my dogs so she can talk tell me about getting "lawyers" and laws this...
