Factory motor balancing. Did they struggle with this one?

Which motor is that? EMax or something? I can't make it out. I have given up on cheap motors. You can put good bearings in them, and they kill them quickly since the bearing bores are not round.

Need Ideas for a Heavy Lift Flight Control System

Well, I'm glad to finally see some clarity about these 600Hz update rate. So it requires a shortened PWM pulsewidth. That now makes sense. This is no longer denying the laws of physics. I'm not sure Arducopter will ever support 760uS and 600hz updates, since we view it as needless...

    Batteries

Just a note here... I went to charge one of the Multistar batteries for the first time, and the charger warned that it was reverse polarity. Checked the plug and... yep, they soldered it backwards. :upset: While fixing it, I noted that the soldering of the connector isn't great in any case...

    Tiger-Motors U8 + 28x9,2 props

Well, maybe not dead calm. There's a light breeze. I would like to see it flying in 30-40km/h winds. I'm not saying it can't. I'd honestly like to see it, to see how well it performs because I don't know.

    Tiger-Motors U8 + 28x9,2 props

No. The flight controller does not control RPM directly. It doesn't even know what the RPM is. It controls throttle output, which controls thrust. PWM generally allows for about 800 steps of resolution here, regardless of motor size, voltage, or anything else. Now, what does matter, is the...

    Tiger-Motors U8 + 28x9,2 props

Yes, but you have to remember that on most DJI flight modes, the throttle stick position has absolutely no connection to the actual motor throttle output. I think too many people actually don't know this, and I don't understand why. This is why we have so many people who come try Arducopter...

What say you all: Red arms forward and white arms aft? Or the opposite?

IMO, red on the left, green on the right, and white on the back is the only thing you should do. Well, I'm now doing yellow on the back, but close enough. I find it odd that navigation lighting is white on the back, but then landing lights, headlights (on a boat etc.) are white. Kinda dumb...

A2 FC Firmware 2.3 - Here We ALL go Again

It's true that experienced programmers probably wouldn't make this mistake. However, from what I've seen, experienced programmers can't get their heads around the inviolable laws of physics. This isn't like programming a database or application. So the project requires a mix of both types...

A2 FC Firmware 2.3 - Here We ALL go Again

Huh, I wonder if it could have been a NaN problem. Not a Number. It basically happens if you do a divide by zero. Pretty common bug with all the complex math going on in these things. We constantly have to fight to prevent this. I always suspected this was the cause of the original Wookong FOD.

    Batteries

Well, it's non-linear, so there's not going to be one easy answer. But considering the case of a 15" flat octo, you have 0.91m2 of disk area. To get the same disk area in a quad or X8, you'd need 21" props. But don't forget how much easier that is to do with only 4 disks. To make an octo...

Could the good times for DJI be numbered (New Align video)

Yeah, I wouldn't spend my money on the first generation of a new Align product. You can't even give away one of their flybarless controllers. Nope, AlexMos does it too. We know what the problem is, and I've tried talking to them a couple times, but they won't listen. This problem will never...

    Folding GPS

This really depends one setup to another. I do question if the risk/benefit of the pole is worth it. This is my first time using it. Up until now, I've just made it work with the GPS simply mounted on a plate above the controller. I decided to give this a shot since everybody else is doing...

    100 KV U10 Motors on 12S and 28X9.2" props ... not efficient !!!??

Yeah, eCalc shows you were not operating in an efficient range for those motors. It'll be more efficient on 8S. Like 50% efficiency vs. 80% efficiency. Is this your desired AUW? If it is, then you need to reduce system voltage, use lower pitch props, or use lower kV motors.

    100 KV U10 Motors on 12S and 28X9.2" props ... not efficient !!!??

Is it consistent across packs though? Or do you have to change the setting with each pack you load? I guess my point is this: While it may be true that it is technically possible to use 100% of the pack, safely, it does require quite a bit of extra effort. In operation, landing at ~80% just...

    100 KV U10 Motors on 12S and 28X9.2" props ... not efficient !!!??

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not. I'm typically flying around at up to 150 km/h. Or doing Acro. It's pretty rare that I'm sitting over a landing area.

    100 KV U10 Motors on 12S and 28X9.2" props ... not efficient !!!??

Yes, but in my experience, it's usually too late. On these bad packs, if I wait until I can see the voltage drop quickly, by the time I actually get it on the ground it's too late, and that cell is usually under 3.0V already. It can happen very fast. I suppose if you're just sitting there...

    Folding GPS

I'm using the Tarot one made specifically for the 650/680 machines, it only fits on a 12mm tube. Works fine for me.

    100 KV U10 Motors on 12S and 28X9.2" props ... not efficient !!!??

Hi Ferdinand, I've just added your battery to my spreadsheet. I also added another column with the inverse calculation for density. Though I think one of these should actually be called specific energy, I'm not sure which! Semantics... Looks like the advertised specs of the Hobby King...

    100 KV U10 Motors on 12S and 28X9.2" props ... not efficient !!!??

Quick eCalc shows that it will fly 50% longer on 8S 15,000 than 12S 10,000.

    100 KV U10 Motors on 12S and 28X9.2" props ... not efficient !!!??

Ferdinand, which ones are you using? I'm using the new HK Multistar batteries, and like them so far. With 20C batteries, I used to land at 3.5 v/cell, 3.3v absolute minimum. You think the 10C batteries can go even lower, probably due to the voltage sag?
