Camera Resolution vs. Display Resolution

Probably a dumb question, but here goes...

If I have a display that has, say, 300-line resolution, why would I need/want a camera that provides a greater number of lines of resolution? From my experience with televisions and computer monitors, providing a higher resolution signal to a lower resolution screen provides no benefit. In fact in some cases, the image can be cropped to accommodate the screen.

Here's my situation...I have a 7" monitor that reportedly has an advertised resolution of 1440 x 234. I'd like to use this with my ground station as I take the leap into FPV. [FWIW, I currently use this monitor to display the live-view from my airborne camera to compose still images---works fine for that.] Anyway, I want to get a dedicated FPV camera and wonder why I should spend the money for, say, a 600-line camera versus getting a cheaper lower res. model. I realize the signal from the higher res. cameras is of higher quality, but will my monitor show the difference?

if you ever had an hd input and set a SD tv on it, you'd be shocked at how much clearer it is. the bigger thing that happens with money thrown at a camera is the processer which as a camera guy you probably get. You know that hdr stuff we were looking at the other post, this is wdr and it's the bomb..... makes shadows show light & contrast, can see in crappy light, etc. facing the sun but seeing the ground is the extreme.

on the lower end ccd is good, cheap, 600 line is $45 delivered. the pixim shows alot more detail in the dark spots but in the day is pretty much the same thing. 690 line $80 delivered. These are the same thing as tbs 59 and tbs 69 without a firmware update by tbs

the 2.8 and the 3.6mm lenses to me seem the best for proximity flying. Wide enough angle to see the sides but a little zoomed i to see ahead

that place takes 10-12 days to deliver, 7 days with dhl ems service.

Dude, you must be clairvoyant. Those were two I was considering. I'm kinda leaning toward the Sony because of cost. Plus, most of the reviews I read on it were favorable.

Moving right along...assuming I got one of those two, what's the preferred way to power it and/or the Tx? I'm using an ImmersionRC 5.8GHz 600 mW Tx. Can I power the camera from the Tx? I'll be connecting to a stock F450. I use a separate battery for the Tx on my hexa to downlink the live-view from my camera.

so the immersion tx has filters, switching regulator works, but it outputs 5v. but it is still powered up and dealt with. The camera however is bummed out in the cold. You could power it with a small 3s pack, could get a larger switching reg like ccbec pro, but the best bang for the buck is this little setup. kinda big for your app, but i'd put the immersion tx and the camera on this running off the main flight pack... this is whats in my zeph

you could probably do it without the filter, but man, that is a clean power supply for vid transmission

I have a small vid capture setup doing 640x480 so this is close to what i see on my monitor....

the eagle tree osd has a bunch of info, that's a ccd and the tbs osd is the gopro. it flips back and forth

6:00 is the ccd struggling

this is a pixim in the dark, to and through a sunrise

even better example (better drop the volume or your wifes gonna wonder)
