What's up with the GoPro naked for $129.99

GoPro, Best Buy and Walmart are all selling the naked for $129.99. I want to get one, just not ready to strap one on to my quad, and crash it. Anyone know if this is a limited time offer or if it is being phased out?

yea, theres been threads on fpvlabs and rcg about it....... the problems are the lens sucks, colors is dull. alot of guys put aftermarket lenses. There doing it cause they've been released a cam every year they've been a business so the logical thought is hero3 is around the corner...... if you want one you should move on it.... there out of production to the best of my knowledge

if you get one, use the polarpro filter, makes the lens problem a cheap fix

what's the best replacement lens and where do you get them? mine has a scratch on it.

I bought one to replace one of the ones I already have that has slammed into mother earth one too many times. While the old one still records, the LCD is broken and it thinks it's in live video out mode all the time even though it's actually turned off in the firmware. The $129 GoPro is the previous version of Hero2, the Hero HD, it just doesn't come with all the mounting hardware that the full kit did when the HD was the top of the line, otherwise it works and records exactly like the two I already have.

A real GoPro replacement lens is close to $100, you'd be better off just buying one of the $129 new Hero HD from Best Buy and keeping the old one for parts. A Sunex non-fisheye lens is around $50, some of the other non-GoPro replacement lens cost more than the Sunex and IMO aren't even as good as the factory lens. If you want a Sunex, I have a used one I'll let you have cheap.

the image quality difference between the hero and hero2 was kinda alot. the best part is the FOV choices but there only good for 1080p. that's the hardest setting to shoot jello free, and if theres any vibes, you'll see it. that polarpro filter really shifted my hero2 from OK to really clear and rich in color. when it's installed right, it makes props in view dissapear. makes jello easier to get away from. there $9.99.

all my hero stuff sucks so bad it took a while to show something decent

this onboard video was what alot of what i have looked like. hero1, stock lens

hero2, stock lens, polarpro

hero2, stock lens no polarpro

this is a good example of what a hero1 is like. straight raw lens, the flight videos not bad, but man, by the time it lands see how dark it films

As a complete beginner, with no experience, to AP, and not sure what I want to do with AP / FPV would this be a good beginner camera, or a waste of $130?

Lee,

The GoPro is a great little camera provided you have enough light and you're not making a habit of flying into and out of the light. They don't adjust very quickly and do poorly in low light condtions.

They're easy to set up for live video-out and the wide view helps make up for the total lack of peripheral vision that you have when you're not actually in the plane or helicopter doing the flying. I happen to really like them and there are probably thousands of professional cameramen throughout the broadcast industry that have entire bags of them for professional use.

$130 will get you a lot of camera if you choose to buy one for that amount.

I don't know if the links at the bottom of the homepage can offer the same deal but if they do, making your purchase via a site link will generate a small commission for the site.

THanks,
Bart

If your just starting ut, this is one tough little camera that'll give you more than one chance to learn how to make a camera work on a multirotor. they also teach you how to deal with jello so it's not a strap and shoot kinda thing.

My biggest complaint about the whole line is there lenses suck across the board, fisheye city and the 1080p mode is extremely difficult to master, but the only mode worth a crap. 720 is alright, but if i upload it to youtube and watch on my 60" tv it looks like a kid did it. the 1080p plays alright on my tv uploaded, but nothing like my nex-5 uploads...... but it's alot heavier and fragille

1 month ago i couldn't find these used for less than $150,,,,,, new $160. I've seen some hero2 over at RCG in the fpv classifieds go for less than $200, if i wanted a gopro and didn't have one yet, the hero1 is a great choice, if i had a hero1, i'd look at the hero2
