This bit kinda put me off -

The joystick connects to the USB port on the ForceFly. The joystick is powered through the USB for all features except the force feedback. The power supply that comes with the joystick may be powered using an inverter to provide the joystick with 24 volts required for the force feedback motors. However, the joystick may also be powered by a DC source. If only 12 volts is supplied to the joystick the force strength will only be about 30% of maximum. This may be suitable for flying since the force strength needs to be turned way down when flying, a little goes a long way. If the operator chooses not to use FFB it should be noted that the centering spring function also requires the FFB to be powered. The best solution to powering the joystick using batteries is to connect a couple in series to achieve 22-24V.
