I am currently sorting out my FPV side of the ship, the Mrs also has a live video downlink...its just a mass of aerials at the mo :) :)
The motors are the easy part Vortex... ;)

That's great to hear Ross......I have all my FPV on order and am waiting on it to arrive. The only thing I can't find it the TX but they say it'll be available in a couple of weeks. I have decided to go with an antenna tracker and have a beaut little unit coming from ServoCity.......

I screwed the airframe together in only a couple of hours so I started with the motors and fitted up the prop adapters to the 5 motors which arrived yesterday (the other 3 are coming from a different supplier) Then I got pulled up when I found I have to cut the shafts and it was too late to go making lots of noise ;)

Looking good mate. As for the motors...yep its a royal pain in the A**E, I ended up sawing 10 shafts...naffed 2 motors in the process (grub screw sheared).
Good luck with the sawing...its toughened steel ;)

Thanks Ross, Yeah I bet it would be if you were sawing them!!! I have a small grinder fitted with a 1mm thick cut off wheel.......Each shaft took approx 30 secs to cut off and dress.

Done as much as I can now until I receive more parts.......The wait is going to kill me!!! ;) It'll give me time to read up on the electronics and work out which camera platform is going to suit my needs but I am seriously leaning toward the PH PRO200 AV 360 + Retractable gear

As I have been testing the Retracts and SJ360+AV200 for a while I would recomend you wait for the release of DJI's new gimbals. Keep in mind that I am using a wkm so I need a fast stable gimbal more than you MK guys.

4210/20 are 5s or 6s motors if u want to filt the skyjib. Second herkules suports nominal 20-25 amps per motor, 30 is peak and from my experience axi can pull 60amps spikes wich can burn the herkules board. So have in mind that full gas on the transmiter could burn the board and make your multikopter a flying rock.
Othervise its a nice setup but i would go for same type only faster motors. More rpm/v since this are too slow (hoover is 70% gas with 1.5kg payload on 4s, 5s is little better, 6s would be the best choice and the amps would go down also wich is good for herkules)

I am planning to build a SJ8 and have been doing a lot of researching (time wasted on the computer going round and round in circles) and have come up with what appears to me to be a suitable list of components to fit out the airframe and get it flying. I am going to worry about the FPV components and camera mount when I get this part of it sorted.

I have listed the parts I have come up with and would like to hear any constructive criticisms if there appears I have misjudged something or could have made a better choice.

Thanks,

Lance

Interesting...Is there any reading material on the new DJI gimbal??

Hey Lanzar, Thanks for the reply. I have emailed Andreas and he assures me the Hercules II is capable of 100A with adequate cooling which I have. I am also running it on 6S to liven it up and keep the amps down. I guess only time will tell once I get it in the air and start testing it but at the moment it appears as tho it'll work ok......If only on paper for the time being :)

It has been an interesting few days and it looks as tho Lanzar knows what he is talking about when it comes to the HercII power boards. I posted the latest on that subject in the power board thread I started a few weeks back.

I have all 8 motors now and just about everything else to get the airframe wired up except that the HercII board is going back and I'm waiting for the new higher current board to be finished before I can wire it up.

I bit the bullet and ordered the Photo Higher AV200Pro gimbal, Pro360 degree pan kit and retractable gear which should be hear early next week.....That should give me something to keep me busy for a night or two.

Photo Higher were very, very good to deal with and I can throughly recommend them!!!

Adaquate cooling ?? Andreas has a cooling board that he sels with his herkuless boards. But the problem is that it only cools one side of the plate while the other is not cooled. Check picture here when installed.
http://www.kopterworx.com/images/stories/Herkules4.jpg. So with that place u only cool 1 side. Andreas taught that this should be enough but i would add extra aluminum coolers in the chips between the conectors for the mottors since these also heat in flight.

I know that the board is capable of 100 amps but i would wait for next release if that is the option. Othervise be gentle on gas so u dont spike it.

About the DJI. I would wait on DJI since all products so far in my opinion are ment for toys and not serios work. Since i have not seen any DJI wokoong video in bad weaher and with good video. They all tend to shake and in a lot of cases crash. We have naza and wokoong for testing and i have had 2 crashes with no apparent reason.
About the DJI gimbal, i would wait until at least some ppl have it and test it before i would buy it for serious work. Looks promising but we will see. There is a DJI inthusiast here on forum named BorisS that has become a DJI specialist. I am shure he will test and report on the gimbal.
Av200 is good. Since u alredy purchased it enjoj it.

Hi Lanzar, Thanks for the post. I agree with the cooling plate only cooling the MOSFETS on one side of the board......If you were to do it properly you'd need 3 plates but the problem is you can't fit a plate to the other side the of the board because the motor wires are fitted to it and would short out so without redesigning another plate, basically it can't be done.

Anyhow I am not taking any chances with a very expensive pair of boards and plate so I have removed it and sending it back and going to wait for the higher current boards.

After reading so many issues with the DJI systems I decided a while ago not to go that route and am sure I have done the right thing.......

Since I have bought the AV200 I am sure I will enjoy it.........

Lance

If they dont come out with PPM in and some more settings to tune the bird the way I would like it to behave in the wind, i dont know if i will stay a DJI enthusiast. Or just keep one DJI setup for calm conditions and a different one for wind :)

Hi Lance
Are you waiting for a specific Herk.board? Or any kind of brand?

Hi Ray, I have been told Andreas is working on a high output power board which will run my AXI4120/20 motors. The Aero board was supposed to run them but is only rated to 35 amps/motor and they draw 37 amps loaded hovering so it's just waiting to go up in smoke also.

So I'm hoping Andreas new board will do the job and it's supposed be only a Month away

I'm still stalled waiting for the new Herc boards.......Did I say patiently??

I'm starting to think I might get a I2C to PWM Converter board and a bunch of ESCs and try my luck....

What's everyone else be doing whilst waiting??
