if I go and do the 5.16 firmware update are all previous updates covered by that or do I have to go 1 by 1 up to that point ive had my controller for a year now but have not kept up with updates like I should have any help is greatly appreciated

You don't have to do a progressive update. Just update to the program that you want. Remember to reset your gains to default and reset. Some have said that 5.16 is solid, I'm using 5.26, but I'm flying a Octo and haven't had any issues. 5.26 is 5.24 with 50 waypoints. No need to go to 5.26 unless you want the waypoints.
