T-motor upgrade for DJI F450

Hi everyone,

New member here, hi and thanks in advance to anyone who posts answers for me. I had a little search around for this topic but couldn't really find to much on it.

So I have a stock F450 except for 10x5" Graupner's running on 2600 mAh 4s, Tarot T2d gimbal and HERO 3. Its running great and I'm really happy with how it flies and films here is my efforts to date.


The flight time with the 2600/4s with gimbal and camera is 5-7min depending on usual variables.

I am wanting to add some extra weight to the quad namely - FPV transmitter and Battery (maybe 180grms) + A/v cord (20grms) to gopro + a bigger 4s lipo say up to 8000 mAh (up to 800grms).

I was looking at upgrading the stock motors with either of the following t-motors


  • MT-2216 900kv V2
or
[h=1]MT-2216 800kv V2[/h]I don't fly acro just smooth as possible for filming so don't need instant power etc but would like to have a little more power to carry more weight.

So I guess my question is what do people here think between these two motors for what I want to achieve? From what I've read they are both great motors but I can't really determine the features and benefits of one Vs the other?

The trouble you will face is the size of the frame, 450 does not give you much room to go anything larger than a 10" prop. For that sort of weight you would want to drop the KV on your motors to something like an 800 and increase your prop size. A 10" prop might work out but I have a feeling that heavy brick is going to be unstable with that size battery on it.

You may want to get some of them RCTimer extended arms http://www.rctimer.com/index.php?gOo=goods_details.dwt&goodsid=845&productname= and put bigger props on the motors. maybe lower the KV a bit more and move to a 12" prop. Hard to say really, you may have to just play around with the size props and find your sweet spot.

To answer your question, the lower the KV the slower they spin, but the more torque they produce.

I am running 2212-13 900kv motors with Graupner 9x5 E-Props on a Disco Pro with all the FPV gear using 4500mH 4S pack with AUW around 2kg and it runs for about 14 mins with this setup.

F450 frame can accomodate an E600 motors set with 12 inch props. I would say you are good to go but make sure you have the right combo. If you go that low you may need a 6S...

Hey econfly, your quad looks great! I've spent a bunch on a big hex that is still?! work in progress, so I am loving the almost plug and play option of the DJI and don't want to stray to far from the original, for what I need I'm happy with what it is.

I would just like to increase the capacity of it a little, carry a slightly bigger battery (I'm not set on carrying a 8000mAh but up to 5000-6000 would be nice), some FPV and still be able to have some good flight times.

Hi PeteDee,

Your set-up sounds like what I would like to achieve, do you have a link or image of it? Did you try the 10in props by chance? The little stock motors seems to handle them well, not hot on finish still plenty of power.

Which brand of batteries are people recommending? I'm currently using Turnigy A-spec on this quad they seem fine, but then I don't have a lot to compare to.
