I bought a used immersionrc vortex and when i went to put in the battery one of the motors started smoking instantly alot. From what i understand the seller replaced this motor and esc that is smoking.

Im pretty noobish to this hobby so im not exactly sure whats going on. Could it be a wire was soldered backwards?

The three wires from ESC connect to three wires on motor in any order. If motor smoking it is, (smoked-zonked) most likely. May not be depending on how long left smoking but. For it to smoke when power applied I have to suspect issues with ESC or power to it. If really fixed was it tested etc. Is always fun buying used stuff.

Black and white wires are ground and signal to ESC and red and black wires power. I think power wires wrong on one. Look at opposite end of guad. Are not both red wires on outer pad? On the two in your pic one red wire on inside it looks like. I am not taking mine apart but looks like red or + wire on outside all cases. Look at opposite end to see correct way for sure but looks like power backwards to one ESC.

I removed the smoking esc/motor on the front right and took out the white and black esc signal wire?

Then i plugged in a battery and the rest of the motors seems fine.

I took a look at the bad motor and it seems some of the coils look to be toast. I watched a video about how to tell if motor is bad and it looks like it is. The video did show how to test with a servo tester but i dont have one.

I took some better pictures of everything. Does it matter which 3 wires from the motor are solder to the 3 places on the esc? Im having trouble finding out any reliable information about how to wire these things. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Does not matter which of three wires go where between ESC and motor. Vortex has rotorsense and you can change direction motor runs in without messing with wires. Is explained in manual. Without rotorsense you have to swap any 2 wires to change direction.

In this picture looks like ESC connected to power correctly. Red goes to pad marked + and black to pad marked - If this was truly a new ESC and motor hard to tell what is wrong. Normally if you hook up signal wires (smaller black and white wires) wrong then ESC just doesn't work. Nothing should burn up. Motor sounds bad but was it bad new or was ESC bad and fried it? You don't know real history for sure. I would replace both and just get on with things.
