One of our best so far... Dewees Island highlight reel

Hope you guys enjoy watching this one. I think it's one of our better highlight reels so far.

Dewees Real Estate asked us to shoot some footage of their unique island that they could use in their promotional videos. This video contains a few of the highlights from our day on Dewees Island, SC.

That is a perfect combination of a beautiful spot and great skills to film it in a most complimentary way.....(hope this proper English...)

Just one question....when shooting against the sun, do you use any filters....?

In terms of learning, would be great to see all the different camera settings and filters used to make this vid.

Thanks

Chris

Jim, I'll let you in on a behind the scenes trick here. When we were grabbing those shots of Reggie with the net, we paused for a moment and hovered over a tree. This started to generate a lot of pollen from the tree and it looked like mist. So we kept hovering and used it to our advantage for a few of the shots.

Thanks, Chris! Will Wheeler, our main camera op at YBF, uses ND filters and on occasion a polarized filter. On this shoot he only used the ND filters. We do our best not to overexpose anything when shooting digital images, but when you shoot into the sun it happens. Then you do your best to set the exposure, knowing that you can adjust some things in post. We shoot a fairly flat image, then dial in more contrast and saturation when we color-correct the video. It's a lot of work to get it right, but we think it is worth it.

Thanks a lot Ben....that clears is up a little bit for me.

Chris

No problem. Since our cameras are hacked, it allows for a bit more room to adjust things in post. For the most leeway in post, you've got to shoot on film or a camera like the Red Epic. I wish I could throw an Arri 235 or an Aaton Penelope on one of these things... Maybe one day.

Ben, I've been using the gh1/gh2 hacks since they came out. I got my gh3 last monday and friday got a Black Magic Cinema Cam. I plan on flying the gh2/gh3 combos and will probably be happy with those for a long time.

With your octo, you can probably fly the Cinema camera. It's a bit heavy, but the dynamic range is unreal. You can pull detail out of highlights. More leeway than you can imagine. It doesn't do 60p so it may not be something flyers want. I'd guess in the next 8-16 months, there will be something with the same dynamic range and 60p in a smaller package. BMCC was announced last April so the competition has had plenty of time to know what a $3,000 high dynamic range camera looks like.

We're supposed to meet up with a BMCC owner next week to check the camera out. Images are awesome off that cam. How do you like the GH3? Our initial impressions are good - we just got one on Friday. Haven't flown it... yet.

Been pretty busy so haven't had much time and then spent the weekend on the BMCC when it came in. You will be surprised how heavy the BMCC is.

First impression of the gh3 are good. I was hoping for better photo's from it to displace my 5D mkII, but that was really wishful thinking.

I'm a little bummed that the composite out or hdmi conversion to composite is proving difficult on the GH3. Bout the only thing I heard that works is an expensive hdmi converter. I have one that works from my 5d, but not the gh2 or gh3. I ordered the cable and that doesn't work. Playback yes, record no.

I've no complaints on picture quality yet, but will wait till I do more with it. Just haven't had enough time. The droid app to remote into cam is nice, but no update when you start recording and you can't shut the camera off from the remote app. Way around it is to set recording time to a set time. Haven't tried any of the other feature yet.

If I were to fly it and take pics with the GH3, I just set the camera up to shoot continuous in raw and then delete the bad ones later on.

Very very nicely done. Really liked the combination of shots, great mix of static, establishing, details etc not just aerial and cut well with the audio too. Works very well overall!! (I give this video two thumbs up, its got a great beat and its easy to dance to) ;) ;)

Thanks guys. Glad you like it. This is just the highlight reel. We hope to shoot some more in the summer, then put together a proper video.
