The video was an elaborate 8 month long hoax by Floris Kaayk, a CGI expert who has produced a few mockumentaries/art films. Apparently it was experimentation with "online storytelling"

all of this is called ornithopter, pretty cool ideas, i've played with a couple designs, but never got anything nailed yet.
