Learning Road Map??

Just wondering if you more experienced guys have opinions on the best learning curve / road map re multi-rotors?

I have a Phantom just now but would really like to get into something bigger and more 'custom' (I love tinkering) what would be the next logical step for me? Ultimately I'd like to get into some filming... I have a GoPro Black but again although I have experience of photography, being new to the multi-rotor world I'm wondering what would be a good 'to aim for' system? I have seen some amazing videos from GoPro's but really would like to understand how DSLR's work under a rotor? Indeed can they even be operated successfully by the pilot?

It's my intention to continue with the Phantom just now and see how I get on with the GoPro.... but id like to buy a new frame and gain experience building it at the same time. I'd be grtateful for any advice.

Thanks in advance

Hi Blades, as a current new guy myself let me share my road map (99% of which was advice given by more experienced flyers right here on this forum)

Buy a DJI 550 Flamewheel (RTF - Ready to Fly) A lot of guys like building it themselves but I like that we went RTF so that we could jump into flying and truly get to ENJOY the hobby before we started tearing down and tweaking everything. We are just starting into building/modifying and surprisingly find ourselves enjoying it very much but I still like that I had a working model to compare and was able to fly quickly. For RTF we recommend Patrick over at AerialMediaPros.com and there also several EXCELLENT builders here on the forum as well.

So why the 550?? Its small enough to crash while learning without costing a fortune. We did. Twice.
It flys great right out of the box. Just make sure to change the props to 10" Graupners (DJI stock props have a colored history)
You can MOD it a MILLION different ways so it grows with you. We've added legs, gimbals, landing gear and now were gonna make it into an X* Coax. By going this route you can start with a little gopro and modded up to the Rebel line of DSLRs. THATS PRETTY DARN ADAPTABLE. It will defnitely be able to grow with you.

We now own a little TBS Quad, a 550 flat 6 like we've recommended above, an AD6 Flat 6 were changing to a coaxial 8 and a Skyjib Flat 8. Guess which one we fly the most and by a LARGE margin ;) ;) Yup, the 550. Toss it in the backseat, go fly, cant go wrong.

Best of luck, you're gonna have a ball!!

Cheers SMP, grateful for the advice. I do like the 550. I feel an element of frustration just now as I want to learn quicker :)

I'm hoping to meet some locals into the hobby which I think will help.

thanks again... Dave
