I need a Controller for H3 2D

Hi All!

I have a F550 setup with the H3 2D gimbal. I am looking for a new Radio with a slider to control the gimbal. I currently have a JRPROPO DSX7 controller (7 channel). I have managed to assign a switch to control the up (180degree) and down (90degree) position (but it is either up or down), I can adjust a bit with trim but it is limited and is not ideal for movement with filming.

Can someone please recommend a good (but relatively cheap) radio that has assignable sliders that works well with the H3 2D - preferably an 8 or 9 channel.

Thanks in advance!!

Easy? You call that easy?
I use the Spektrum DX10t. Has two sliders in the middle you can assign. Great for one man operation. They are proportional so when you move it, it keeps on moving, the more you slide them the fast the rotation. Some people also use a knob style button on their tx.

Hi Benjamin

Thanks for that, I must say the DX10 looks really impressive but at about $1000 it is beyond my budget, I was looking more around the $300-$500 region.

On a separate note, I enjoyed your show reel, especially the behind the scenes at the end. Good show! Do you have a separate operator for the gimbal? I see you have a GH2 and I see the new GH4 is out today, I will wait and see if the GH3 drops in price as I will upgrade to the Z15 in the near future. What are those 2 blocks above your monitor?

Anyway the search for a "reasonably" priced Radio continues! Any more insight would be appreciated, I see Turnigy do a cheap 9 model - but someone told me they are not reliable.

Hey mate,

The two blocks on the monitor are little patch antennas. Nice and neat. Monitor has built-in diversity receiver. I sometimes use a camera operator. The clip at the end shows the cam op sitting down with the goggles on. I'm the one with the beard. I also use a single operator setup to keep the costs down for clients.

Good luck with your tx search! Get a good one. Tx's are with you for years, aircraft change frequently.

I'm using a 25mW ImmersionRC VTx with a 3 skew plantar Fat Shark antenna. Good up to 500m with the patch antennas. Cool?

Hi Ben,
25mw good for 500m, is that using a diversity and the 2 patch antennas ?
Im using a lot more power than that and i would not get 500m without some drop outs I've got a boscam 5.8 system with planer and clover antennas, i want to upgrade asap, thinking of hanging out until the DJI Light bridge has been released.

Yes but being I am in the US I can probably run more than 25mW ;) I think I can run 100mW. I am just worried about the 5.8 penetration of the signal as I have a lot of trees to deal with on a lot of my shoots. I have a 1.2 Ghz solution now that works well, but that monitor is slick.

It's the receiver antennas that are the most important in my opinion. When you say 'planar' do you mean those straight antennas that come free with everything (we call them 'rubber duckies')? They are the worst! Put a clover on your VTx and patch on your receiver. Awesome range with that combo. On my 'just for fun' F550 I have a 600mW VTx and that has got to 2km (2.4GHz transmitter gave out first).

If you can run higher then do it :tennis:. Penetration with 5.8GHz is very poor. One tree is just about okay but no more. 1.2GHz would certainly have much better results but it's not recommended to be used with a 2.4GHz control system (something to do with frequency overlap, I made that up to be honest, but something like that).

Ideally you shouldn't be flying with things obscuring your line of sight, even trees. Just my two cents.

Well I have many, many flights on my 1.2 (but I suppose technically it is 1.3) with no interference problems. I love to fly LOS but unfortunately sometimes the shot requirements do not allow it. I was over at a potential customers house yesterday they want me to shoot some water shots and the back 5 acres is all trees surrounding the pond. That part will have to be flown all FPV.

That Lightbridge solution does look amazing be interesting to see how it pans out.

Ben,
Im using a Clover leaf on my tx and a skew planer on my rx, No the rubber duckie went in the bin at the same time as opening the packet lol.
I think my problem is more about the boscom tx I'm using, i better invest in some immersion bits asap. The light bridge will be at a cost but worth the money by the looks of it.

Groovy. I haven't really looked into 1.2 and 2.4 mixtures so have no idea if I'm honest, just random readings on the forum :02.47-tranquillity:.

I think the lightbridge will be really awesome if it works well. HD downlink is a very tempting thing for live broadcast!

Cool thank you.
Thinking of getting the black pearl, but I'm not sure if the immersion diversity will be a better receiver to use ?

Lightbridge looks good from the little info on the web, but what I would love to know is if there is a way to control camera settings through the same interface? I want to get a 3axis gimbal for a gh3, but I don't want to have to set the camera up on the ground and not be able to make changes while flying. Not sure if there is a way to currently do this?
