A real live newbie here. In the last few years I have had major back surgery twice and now have a total of 7 fused vertabrae in my lower back. I recently sold my Honda Interceptor (2007 Aniversary Edition) with less than a 1000 miles on it due to my back issues. In addition, I've had to resign as a County Police Reserve Officer which I really enjoyed doing. (hence the screen name "Brown Pig")
So I needed a new hobby. I am nearly 60 years old, and am a Systems Administrator at a small AeroSpace machine shop. (Been here nearly 30 years) I started out as a machine operator worked my way up to running a one man toolroom. I loved tool and die work, but (I know, you already heard this one) my back was giving out. I do manage to sit in front of a computer all day!
In my search for a new hobby, I found RC flying. Tried a foam trainer type aircraft a HawkSky I think its called. Not bad. Then I bought a little coax heli for indoors. What fun. Then I started thinking about trying a real helicopter. But the more I read the more I knew I didn't have the patience to learn how to fly a real copter. Then I found MultiRotors! They have a little box in there that does the hard stuff and I think I can manage one of these. I bought a nice custom made Hex-Spider frame. Next I ordered a DJI FlameWheel F550 ARF with a NAZA FC. My plan is to build the DJI Plastic Hex and use it as a trainer. Then all the electronics, motors, esc, etc. will move to the sexy looking spider frame. Once I have that mastered, I want to do some AP and possibly FPV. I just picked up a slighly used Futaba 8FG TX. Now I'm looking for a good RX for this system. So I am in the "gathering all the parts" phase. I did buy a used Great Planes Simulator setup, and I was right, I could never fly a heli! But I am flying the simulator as practice for the day I get mine finished.
So I will be doing searches, asking questions, lurking about, and doing all the stupid crap newbies do 'till they know better.
