DJI and hexa in high winds

Me and a mate took the hexa out today to see what it did in high wind. One take-off was disastrous as the wind blew the heli over and it broke the camera gimbal!

Have a look, it's a bit long winded (pardon the pun) but you can see how it is battered by the wind...have a look from about 10:15 onwards

Welcome to MultiRotorForums.com!!
was it using GPS to hold position or was it just trying to compensate using the gyro/accelerometer references?

Bart, all GPS. Even though it wasn't 100% stable, I was impressed at how well it compensated.

Hi Gunter,

how did you treat your gains in these test, did you bring them down or did you stick to the same gain settings as if the conditions would have been perfect !

Thanks

Boris

Boris, at first gains were at 150% and then I tried 175% with a slight increase in performance.

Most difficult thing is taking off!

Hi,
yes it is a disaster with the wind at Wookong fly.
It wobble even at low wind. It is simply not get shut off this wobble in the wind. Requests for DJI has unfortunately also brought nothing.
There are always only a simple answer. The MK is not so sensitive to the wind.

Hopefully, the DJI with the next software update gets a grip.

It is currently just for hobby pilots.

Or you can fly only when there is no wind. :dejection:

I fly in wind all the time. No real issues. I don't understand your comment Christian that it is only for hobby pilots. If you are taking off in wind you need to "pop" it up quickly and it will stabilize immediately. You do need to have your gains set correctly. In GPS mode, the craft will be fighting high winds by quickly adjusting looking as though it is moving around. That happens in gusty winds. In steady winds it just sits there counteracting the wind. If you are having issues in the wind your set up may require tweaking. Also note the DJI specification that winds need to be less than 18 MPH. Over that you are on your own.

Hi Lou,
We are now seven pilots have all the same problem.
Flying in the wind does not go with Wookong Hexa. We have tried a lot, unfortunately, all without success.

Check out some of my video:

I would not be able to fly with one Wookong Hexa. These recordings I made with one MK Hexa.
I would have liked to use the Wookong hexa, but I live between two seas (North Sea and Baltic Sea) which is always a little wind.
7 pilots with 7 Wookong system can not adjust anything wrong?
Therefore, the Wookong only as a hobby and not flying for film productions and industrial films. I can not always wait until there is no wind there anymore.
Sorry, but this is the time for my opinion Wookong system.
Maybe that will change even once.

And, sorry for my bad English

I too have little problem with a WK-M setup and wind. If you are getting lot of wobbling, clearly the gains are not high enough. If you can't get the gains high enough to stop the wobbling without the platform starting to oscillate, the problem is likely that your disc loading is too light for the overall weight meaning it is over-propped. Dropping down a prop size is usually all it takes to see a vast improvement.

It's taking some tweaking for me, particualarly lowering my ATTI gains a lot, but it's getting better in the wind.
This was shot in some crazy gusty winds except where I could find shelter in a valley were some shots were taken:
This was some pretty steady wind, not crazy strong, but you can see the flag.. and the flying was fast:
Both were shot before I improved my gain settings. I'll try and do some more wind flying in the upcoming weeks.
