Am I forced to upgrade firmware?

I have been trying to use the Naza set-up assistant and, unless I'm missing something, it appears I can't use it until I upgrade to the latest firmware. Is there a way to bypass that and stay with a less recent version?

The firmware relates to the version of the assistant program you're using. If you use the assistant that matches the firmware you won't be asked to upgrade. The good thing is if you want to use another version just download the corresponding assistant program and connect it.
