Airport security and customs

Hey guys,

I'm new here, looking at building a quad in the next month or two and just doing all my research now. I'm just working on my first tech questions but I do have a random fun question; how many of you guys take your quad on flights with you and have you ever had any problems with airport security and/or customs?

I fly maybe once a fortnight and if the quad becomes a big part of my business it will probably come with me on about half of those flights..... I like to avoid checked luggage, I just carry my camera gear in a backpack so I was thinking about getting a carry-on-sized pelican case for my quad. I have had occasional interest from airport security in my camera bag (I carry a lot of cables) and a folded down quad could look very interesting on an x-ray scanner hehe :)

Anyone had any problems getting their gear through security or got any good stories about flying with a multi?

Cheers!
Dan.

Dan will probably depend on the countries flying from/to. Primary question will be on your LiPo batteries. Doubt if anyone will question the copter.

I haven't carried either of my multirotors with me on travel... yet (will be in a couple of months). However, I have traveled (domestically) with 2 LiPo batteries, and TSA didn't have any problem with that part. I know I've seen several others on this forum post about their traveling experiences with their aircraft, and doesn't seem to be an issue. The comments have been more regarding the travel case size, and how, depending on the size of the case, that is a subjective decision by those at the gate.

Hehe cool, I was just curious. I do get the occasional 'sir we would like to look in your bag' but that might be due to me looking more like a bum than a photographer. The X666 is a pretty gnarly looking unit so it'll be interesting to see what happens when I fly with it :)

Batteries should be fine I travel with ten or more camera batteries all the time. If you ever fly in Japan make sure you don't have a lighter in your pocket, they don't like that ;)
