Neat idea! Small point - I would recommend using a shim washer even on "the top of the bottom motor". It is a shim washer, i.e it's designed to create the correct amount of end-play between the bell and the stator. Leaving it out will allow the bell to climb up and down the shaft - not desirable.

You really should knock it off with the back-handed comments, Bart! This site (whether intentionally or not) is heavily centred on AP, which is not (yet) a major focus for OpenPilot. Given the volume (and breadth) of activity at OP's own forum (established long before this one) it should be...

Not sure why you're spending time defending your decision not to be interested in OpenPilot ;) - but I will say that your evident understanding of the OP product is incorrect: it's the commercial products that (by the evidence) make you pay to be an unwitting beta tester.

... and that's what OpenPilot has always advised. There's never been any suggestion of competing for your business or anyone else's. The devs do what they do for the love of it. The hardware is "available when it's available". One aspect that doesn't get mentioned often is the knock-on effect...

You might consider a nice plastic protective case for your new CC3D board - available at http://www.shapeways.com/shops/multirotors :)

If you use an Rx-type other than PWM (i.e. Spektrum satellite, SBus or PPM) you can reconfigure some of the unused inputs into 4 more outputs, meaning a total of 10 outputs. Thus you can have an Octo and still have two outputs for gimbal servos. :)
