    Vulcan Y6 Build - Help!

Yep - their ESCs are generally good. Some of the batteries can be okay. But I'm pretty sure their motors are usually pants :) I'm also a photog, Martin - using Turnigy motors to carry an EOS M would be like using a cheapo Vivitar tripod ;) (IMHO)

    Vulcan Y6 Build - Help!

Turnigy is Hobby King's own brand. Personally I wouldn't put anything branded "Turnigy" on an AP rig (particularly if you're charging clients for working with it). Their quality generally sucks (and their customer service is non-existent). Tiger is a good choice - their motors are always good...

Hoverfly What Makes Good Aerial Video

Be careful with a polarizing filter on a GoPro - you're likely to get an uneven darkening of the sky - the angle of polarization of the sun's light varies continuously with the angle from the sun. With a lens wider than about 28mm (in 35mm film terms) the sky will be unevenly polarized. On a...

    Hoverfly Something BIG coming soon!

Some excellent general info coming out. Just to add: the additional heatsink on the FETs is obviously a smart move but remember that if you do have battery-side wires any longer than original supplied with the ESC then the caps will have to work harder to absorb the greater voltage spiking -...

Two "first posters" talking up Hoverfly GPS? Smells like... ;)

    Hoverfly Something BIG coming soon!

And I bet some users will think "Hey! I'll remove the heatshrink so they stay cooler inside those carbon-fibre tubes!" ;)

    Hoverfly Something BIG coming soon!

Putting an ESC in an unventilated space will most certainly make it runner hotter than it would with an airflow. No electronic components like heat or vibration - without these two factors electronic devices would have a more or less infinite life. The capacitors will be the most vulnerable...

X8 vs. flat octo redundancy comparison.

Sorry if you've explained this already - what prop pitch do you use top and bottom?

    Hoverfly Something BIG coming soon!

http://www.sky-hero.com/downloads/Spyder.pdf (see 1:00 onwards) It's such a daft idea I had to double-check. It's right there in the build manual. Two ESCs enclosed within each arm - no ventilation at all :dejection: http://www.sky-hero.com/downloads/Spyder.pdf

X8 vs. flat octo redundancy comparison.

I don't see why this flat vs coax thing is such a big issue. What does "It's less efficient" really mean? Shorter flight time for the equivalent configuration. Big deal! - why would maximum flight time be the highest priority for AP? I've gone for coax because flat layouts are just too darn big...

    Hoverfly Something BIG coming soon!

The dealer map on the Sky-Hero site shows nothing (currently) for USA - so I'm assuming Hoverfly have grabbed the USA territory for this rather odd machine. Two ESCs inside each arm? Errmmm... bad idea, methinks!

Aeronavics / Droidworx Droidworx Power Distribution Board

We'll have to agree to disagree, then - I hope @AerialShutters reads both your opinion and mine and makes a wise choice :) Not at all - we can/should all share our knowledge but in a responsible way, mindful of the possible consequences of advice/opinions that we offer.

Aeronavics / Droidworx Droidworx Power Distribution Board

Hi dazzab I wasn't really questioning what you have or do - more that you were suggesting to the OP that he could "go right ahead" because it works for you and it's within the published spec, ignoring wires, connectors, soldering skills and all the other considerations. The OP didn't mention...

Aeronavics / Droidworx Droidworx Power Distribution Board

What?! No! Stop this madness!! :nevreness: "Works fine for me" or "the rated spec is..." are not valid reasons to skip a proper consideration of what's going on here. You're talking about 240A!!!! You can weld steel with a lot less! The PDB might take that current but what about the wires and...

GoPro3+ on test with standard Phantom

:) It's a little difficult to keep up with your recommendations, Denny. You've built a succession of weird and wonderful machines, declaring each of them (at the time) as rendering everything else invalid. Now all cameras bigger or more expensive than a GoPro are "male jewellery"? And SLR lenses...

    What multi for professional work?

I'm shortly embarking on the UK certification process myself so I'm intrigued by the highlighted statement. I understood that craft under 20kg are not "type tested", i.e. they are not held to the construction/build/airworthiness regulations/standards that larger craft would need to satisfy. So...

GoPro3+ on test with standard Phantom

I agree that you don't need a Red to create a good video, of course. But is there really such a difference in weight/duration/safety with, say, a NEX/GH (or a BMCC) rig? Wouldn't the PP workflow surely be a whole lot easier/faster and, most importantly, of predictable output quality? I don't...
