Turnigy 9X Sucks Down Batteries Like Crazy!!

I recently purchased a Turnigy 9X transmitter and have been using Everready lithium AA's in it to reduce the weight, since it takes 8 cells. I have only had this thing about 10 days now and not flown a whole lot using it, and have been careful to turn it off when not in use. In these few days, it has went through two sets of these expensive batteries already! I'm just flying cheapo WL Toys V949 quads and have been used to getting weeks and weeks of use from their little supplied controllers that only need 4 of these batteries. I can see how much better the 9X controls the quads, but damn, this thing is expensive to feed. Have I got a bad one here with some kind of short, or is the lithium cells not the best choice or what? Doesn't this kind of battery consumption seem a bit extreme?
