So. After reading loads I just took delivery of my Sony HDR-CX730E. As usual it was a hard choice not really knowing to much about them so I thought I would make some videos about it. You can then make your own minds up wether this camera is for you or not. I think it will compliment my ADX3 for my own work. We will see. Part 1 below.

I will be interested to learn whether or not you find the advantages of the BOSS lens, composite video out and relatively light weight outweigh the pitiful manual options, the virtual impossibility to adjust parameters once mounted (especially with that exasperating touch screen), the in-camera battery charging only and the filter/lens hood problem.

You have a week to decide and get a full refund from Amazon!

Really helpful stuff Dave, Thanks. I've just started looking at one of these. Keep it coming.

HI,

i have a CX 740 and i'm fully satisfied with it.

If you have good Roll stabilisation, the BOSS is just some of the best stabiliser system available it will delete all small hick ups and jitters of the gimbal without giving you a wonderful " motion blur" effect..

For all other points, they have simple solution, also there is a LANC control PCB available to contrl recording and zoom ( pretty useful) with indication LED, and finaly, to make it simple: if you are not very used with deep setings of a camera ( which is my case) you will be much more happy than with for example a 5D or a GH2 and the CX will help you keep some results that yo can edit and use.

Also, very useful thing, the pullable eye visor that allow to power on or off the camera even with the screen closed. That is a lovely feature ! Video out never gave us any kind of problems so far.

Now, if you are a really good camera operator and know all settings in depth, yes the GH2 for example can give better results, but only under some specific conditions..

For the manual settings, there is manual exposure, manual focus and just disable smile detection and you can use " cinema" color mode or normal mode ( just ask the guy you are delivering the video to wht he prefers) and well you will be able to deliver some pictures even usable for professional media people, colors and stuffs, they will work themselve on postproduction if needed.

I'll post a link to some videos made with a CX 700 and post worked by professionals for a specific video clip as soon as the clip wil be released to show what you can get :)

But well, be positive : ) CX is a really great tool ! And ti's a consumer camcorder, not a special gimbal ready thing so you obviously have to deal with some small stuffs :)

Best regards,

Fabien
