Motor get heat because of wrong ESC ?

Hi Guys,

I have set up my flying gear as below:

Frame: Cinestar 8
Controller: WKM
Gimbal: Cinestar Gimbal
Motor: MK3638
Propeller: 14 APC
ESC: Hobbywing 40A for 2-3s lipo
Battery: Gen Ace 5300 lipo 6s & Turnigy 6000 4s

I recently found that the ESC only support for battery up to 3s therefore it would only work with 4s lipo and after just 1-2 minute hovering at GPS mode; the electric & the motor become quite hot.

I am now wondering whether the motor become hot cuz I am not using the right ESC or it has been overloaded (total weight: 6.5kg) ?

If it has been overloaded, should I change the motor to a higher capacity one ?

Actually, I am having Herkules board II but I am thinking to buy hobbywing ESCs because I read some high recommendation in the forum. With hobbywing ESC I will add 0.5kg to the weight while I really want to increase my fly time(With Herkules I would save 0.5kg therefore with Herkules I would save 1kg)

Have any one also in this situation like me before and what is your suggestion ?

Happy May Day to all of you.

Cheers,

Cuong

Hi Cuong,

its a little confusing what you are writing here:

-----------------------------------------------------------

ESC: Hobbywing 40A for 2-3s lipo
Battery: Gen Ace 5300 lipo 6s & Turnigy 6000 4s

I recently found that the ESC only support for battery up to ? 3s therefore it would only work with 4s lipo's ? and after just 1-2 minute hovering at GPS mode; the electric & the motor become quite hot.

----------------------------------------------------------

The two kinds of hobby wing esc i know are platinum and fun fly and both 40A version support 2 - 6 s.

Much more important than thinking about changing the ESCs right away is taking a look at the way you configured the ESCs.

Can post you settings for the ESCs ?

Your weight calculation of reducing the weight be one 1kg by using two herk board is to optimistic. You will have a weight reduction but not of 1Kg.

Thanks Boris, Actually they are skywalker series of hobbywing. By mistake I bought those escs to use with my 4s battery and not notice the maximum lipo it can support :( When I bought 6s lipo, luckily I discover the issue and thinking to change into Herkules :)

How is your Herkules board Boris ? are they sill working well and stable :) Will your esc & motor get hot after 5-6 minutes of flying ?

Cheers

HI Cuong,

I am happy with my herkules boards. But at the same time the info is already out that there will be new herkules boards coming out any time soon now. So i would really wait for those. Best compromise would probably be to buy normal ESCs for now which are not that expensive and than switch to the new herkules once out and tested !

Boris

Hi Boris,

Just install the Herkules for 3 days and after 10 times in the sky one of the board has problem :( while with the cheap hobbywing ESC it fly smoothly even the power I put on them little bit over their capability.

Can not say anything, too disappointed for Herkules board :(

The new Herkules III will be beta tested mid to end of July so September-October is a realistic date.

The best Herkules II alternative for non I2C FC's is the Castle Phoeinix Ice esc's or the Hobbyking F40-F60 reflashed with simonk firmware.

Honestly I believe that both the Aerodrive board and the Herkules II board's are made for light systems with small motors running with 11-12 inch props.

Now I would like to replace Herkules II with Hobbywing Platinum 40A series and the only matter that really bother me now is how to reduce the weight and increase the flight time :)

With my experience with Herkules so far, I can not trust them to carry my gear :( In my case, can I return the board to seller and ask for a reimbursement cus the bad quality product ?
