Aaaah Feck it...

Just managed to fry my PMU...

I connected the camera gimbal to try and get it working, a few seconds later the PMU was smoking...here's hoping I can buy a new PMU on its own and not have to fork out for a whole new system!!

I'm now leaving the workshop to have a glass of wine and try and forget about this rather unfortunate incident :(

Gunter.

Gunter dont trouble yourself to much about the PMU and just setup everything. I and also KEN used the WKM without the PMU for quite a while, so there is no real need for it. Just take care when you take your first test hovers to monitoring the voltage and maybe not fly longer than 3 mins and check the voltage.

Come on thats not going to set you back ! Just a spare part for later that will add a feature !

I'd feck it too and probably go for something stronger then wine! Good support from Boris... and now makes me wonder if I have a feck it moment too.. will they sell the parts seperately.

I still am flying the hex without the power module, the ESCs are powering the system with the exception of the AV 130 that has its own CC BEC Pro running the servos. I set the timer on the TX and land when it goes off, same thing I do with the rest of the fleet including the WKM quad that does have the power module.

Thanks for the encouragement Boris, at first I thought that I would be grounded for another few weeks until a part came, but at least it will still work without. I just need to know where to plug in the GPS??

I spoke to Geoff at quadcopters.co.uk and he will order me a new PMU separately.

Gunter, what caused the PMU to burn? I'd first isolate the cause...

It was the servo on the camera gimbal...I may very well have plugged it in the wrong way, because the plugs don't have a little ridge on like the receiver plugs...bit of a bad design for someone like me who doesn't know exactly how these things work!

Gunther i am confused did you want to hook the servo up to the PMU ? Use the BEC of the PMU to power your Gimbal ?

Gunter thats a real bummer about the pmu, sorry to hear that ! It does start an interesting point what will the ordering of separate units cost in the wkm system and will you be able to order them ? Also if your able to just buy a flight controller then that may help some people. Coupled with a pmu and and the power connection you could leave out the gps/satellite and still have an awesome config. ??

I havent plugged in my camera gimbal because there are some things I need elaboration on so i think i'll wait till this weekend for some expertise advice.

Are you sure that the servo was not stalled? I would never power the camera mount through the imu They do not recommend it. Only use the ground and the signal wires. If your camera mount stalls it will crash your model.

Good advice Denny, thanks. Do I then just stick the positive onto a ubec?

Gunter it also smacked me :) Although i am 100% sure nothing was wrong with the polarity. My PMU units does nothing else than producing heat. Luckily i can use my second one until I get it replaced hopefully !

I too am using the Tx timer and not the PMU. The more weight I can shed the more I can put into the camera stuff. I grade the batteries as they are not all the same capacity. I must get some Thunder Power or Hyperion 45C. These Zippy's are ok for the money But!

I power the camera mount and the telemetry from a separate battery with regulators.

My PMU also blown up

Hi,

i made a mistake and connected the PMU not to X1 but directly to my receiver. Polarity was OK. After parts of a second, smoke came out of the PMU.
What i dont understand is that if i connect a receiver battery with 5 Volts to my receiver everything is OK. But the output from the PMU says V-SEN 3A/5Volt.
So what did i wrong?

I ordered a new PMU at my dealer, but the price is horrible. 125,-- €

Heinz

HI Heinz,

if i didn't misunderstand the manual or actually that the way i am doing it now. Is to split up the V-sen cable in V signal for the MC and red black power from the BEC for the RX. I don't think you did anything wrong concerning your approach it should work.

But for me it was differently first the PMU worked but only after 5 sec or so on the regulated power supply. Than the LED went on on the MC like from a old car the head lights would when starting the motor. I already knew something was wrong. Tried it again same thing. unhooked it to measure voltage coming from it. But that was it nor more output just heat generated and up to 5 A drawn.
