Hi, my name is Martyn and I'm a .........hang on, wrong forum.

Got a Wltoys 959 the other week and I am hooked, now looking to get a f450 ARF, NAZA lite + gps with a Futaba 8J to mount an AEE cam for fun photography. Looking forward to searching and asking for advice.

Hi there

No, it's not the forum for Anonymus Alcoholics....it's the forum for Anonymus Multrotorics.

If you think that you are hooked, just wait for the months to come.....will be a roller coaster between highest highs and lowest lows, but you will see.

Where are you in this beautiful country....? Hopefully close to Cape Town, than it's easy to help you...

Keep well and don't be shy to ask any questions

Hi Chris,

actually I'm in Hartbeespoort, so not too close to CT!

I see prices around SA are a little OTT have you had any joy importing, if so from where?

I only moved from Austria to Cape Town in September last year and half of my container was full with Multirotor stuff.....getting my hands on parts was a main concern. Funny enough, I still needed a few things and ordered stuff from China:

http://foxtechfpv.com/ with DHL as shipper

and from Amerika: http://www.getfpv.com/ with UPS as shipper.

Although shipping is not THAT cheap, but I always wait a bit and place bigger orders. Rather use UPS as shipper since they are a bit more efficient than DHL. If buying from America, NEVER use USPS....your parcel will never arrive.

Both orders took about a week to have it at home, went through customs very quickly and import duty was very low.....about Rand 300 for a US$ 1.200 order....not bad and a lot cheaper than getting stuff into Europe.

A good place to buy GensAce LiPo's (in my mind the best) locally would be here: http://www.goblinhobbies.co.za/brands-category/gens-ace.html

So no worries about importing stuff....

If you need anything else, just post here or send me a PM

Have fun

Chris,

you should not be paying any duty on RC imports only VAT @ 14%, if you send me a PM i will give you the Tariff Headings.

As far as what I am planning to build, F450 ARF with Naza (might go full Naza and not the lite) what do you think?

You are right....I had a look at the papers.....it was VAT and some fees.

For a beginner, the F450 with NAZA (go for the full one + the Bluetooth module, makes tuning much easier ) is a good choice. Parts are cheap, a welth of knowledge is available...

The Futaba 8J is great if you want to stay "small", but later on you will need as many channels as your budget allows you to buy.....if you want to "grow" later, the Futaba 14SG would be the better choice.

With AEE cam I guess you mean this one: http://www.aeecameras.com/
I don't know that cam, but the trouble is: you will need a gimbal to get stabilized footage, and most of the 2-axis gimbals on the market are for GoPro's....I just bought the GoPro Hero 3+ and I am more than happy with it. Best bang for the bucks is this gimbal:
http://www.hobby-wing.com/arris-cm2000-gopro-brushless-gimbal.html .....it is set up completely already....just plug and play.

ARF or home-built is always a big question....ARF gets you in the air quicker, home-built gets you more familiar with all the bits and pieces.....I build everything myself, lots of things (bad solder, screws not tight...) can go wrong with ARF.

If you go for the F450, this baby will take you to the next step if you want to carry on with the hobby: http://team-blacksheep.com/products/product:202

The great thing: you can use the arms from the F450 and the Naza to build the Disco....

Hi Chris,

was trying to decide between the Lite of full system Naza, and I think I will go for the full system. The Aee Magicam is just as good as the gopro but I got one at a steal, it is fully compatible with all gopro accessories.

The ARF I am looking at is really a kit and 90% DIY http://www.coptershop.co.za/index.php?id_product=68&controller=product so most of the build and solder work I will do myself. The Spider does not look too different from the disco?

Hello

You are right, the Spider LOOKS similar to the Disco, but is a completely different thing. In fact the Spider is a knock-off by RCTimer, a company which just copies other companies products.....The biggest difference is that the Disco is basically a "flying circuit-board" which saves a lot of hassels when it comes to laying cables and wires....the Disco also comes with the "Core" - http://team-blacksheep.com/products/product:14 - which is used to power all sorts of equipment on your rig + got integrated OSD...

Here is the manufacturers website of the Spider: http://www.rctimer.com/product_1074.html looks like exactly the set you posted, but less $$....

Not saying it's a bad product, just telling the difference between Disco and Spider.

It's funny how Chinese companies start to copy each other now....here is the original DJI S800 : http://www.dji.com/product/spreading-wings-s800 and here is the RCTimer knock-off : http://www.rctimer.com/product_985.html

Here is a long read for you concerning the above: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1661917
