What could cause sudden voltage drop?

While at hover after initial takeoff on a full battery, what types of situations could cause a sudden ~1 second voltage drop? Enough to kill the motors and set off the battery alarm for only a moment (but was long enough to crash it).
I know that batteries can fade suddenly. Are Turnigy nano-techs bad about this?
Are there any other possible causes?

Have you measured the cell voltages when the battery is full/empty? They should only have around 0.01V - 0.05V deviation. If one or several cells are out of balance, it is a good sign that the battery is not okay and should not be used anymore. The battery voltage always drops during current draw and the faulty cells might even drop to 0-2V while healthy cells stay at around 4 volts, causing a cut off and crash. The only way to be sure, is to measure the cell voltages under load. Turnigys are not the best batteries out there.. I have had good ones and bad ones. The bad ones are really bad.

Ps. Please don't measure while holding the heli over your head ;)

6 or 8 motors operating simultaneously draws an excessive amount of current especially when the motors startup since starting current can be up to 300% of normal running current.
If you are using 20C rated batteries, the MR will be taking off in burst mode which can only last about 15 seconds......
While it is not common practice, it is possible to run separate power from a smaller, e.g., 11.1 volt battery to the Flight computer and use the powerful batteries strictly for the motor current. Should a heavy current draw cause the voltage to dip suddenly it only affects the escs and motors and not the flight computer.
In any case no-one can successfully fly a Multirotors with 20C batteries without extreme risk of flight failure sooner than later. This is why it is highly recommended to always use 35C or higher C rated batteries. The C rating has nothing to do with the number of cells or the maH capacity.
